About the event

DEAR DESIGNERS, MAKERS, ARCHITECTS, + STUDENTS,

The kagu | akari is an annual furniture and lighting design open call and exhibition at fishcake and this year marks it's 12th year. The purpose of this project is to discover new design proposals and talents, and we explore the possibilities of furniture and lighting fixtures designed in Hawaii with designers, manufacturers, architects, artists, and students. An open call for outstanding designs will be held again this year, and the works selected by the jury will be presented at the exhibition.

This year's theme, knockdown furniture or lighting fixture. The works should be easily and handle repeated assembled and disassembled, and should fit into a box for shipping with ease.

At a time when manufacturers and artists from around the world can create and sell a wide variety of furniture and export it around the world, why not reconsider the significance and most appropriate way to design, manufacture, and sell furniture and lighting fixtures in Hawaii?

Furniture in compact packages, such as folding and assembled furniture, requires not only the final form of the object, but also the knockdown method, a manufacturing process that fits Hawaii's manufacturing environment, a method of storing the product in a compact package.

This Year's Kagu | Akari Open Call raises issues that need to be considered when creating furniture and lighting fixtures in Hawaii, and explores solutions to these issues through the power of design.

We are pleased to announce that the upcoming exhibit will be co-organized with Miyako Nishinakagawa and blind juried by architecture experts, Bundit Kanisthakhon (Assistant Professor, Design & Construction, Tropical Architecture, The UHM School of Architecture) and

Keiji Ashizawa (Architect, founder of ISHINOMAKI Laboratory).
